We split each manifesto into key policy areas and then assessed how well each manifesto aligned with our own policy positions to determine which parties are putting people and planet first.

Distribution of Power

We need to see decision-making power in the UK spread more equally across the country, allowing people to make choices that best suit their lives and their communities, which would in turn create positive and sustainable change that benefits everyone. Examples of this equal distribution include devolution of power to local governments, lowering the voting age, and funding community led projects.

Economy

We need to see economic changes that put climate change and environmental issues at the heart of all decision-making. This would include encouraging banks to divest from fossil fuel investments, moving towards a more circular economy, or shifting focus away from exponential economic growth.

Energy and Natural Resources

Our planet needs to see a complete shift to renewable resource use. Our next government needs to make ambitious, but achievable, targets to reach net zero in the energy sector, as well as commitments to the sustainable use of other natural resources, like water.

Land use and Biodiversity

We need to see parties support a return to nature-friendly farming that champions sustainable farming initiatives and helps to improve food security in the UK. All parties must strongly commit to both habitat restoration and species restoration that includes setting aside large areas of land to be restored, equal access to green spaces, and encouraging nature recovery in urban environments.

Transport

We need to move away from unsustainable modes of transport. To achieve this we need to see fully functional public transport systems across the UK that are accessible and affordable for everyone. Political parties should commit to eliminating petrol and diesel vehicles as soon as possible as well as implementing sanctions for the aviation and shipping industries.

Jobs and Education

Education is a human right. We need to see political parties supporting education for all, improving literacy and numeracy, and learning about key social and environmental issues. Every young person must be provided with the opportunities to learn and gain skills pivotal to the green transition. We especially need to see the next government create green jobs and training schemes, to build a workforce that can create a more sustainable society.

Military and Borders

Genocide and ecocide are completely unsupportable. We need to focus on promoting global peace and our government must never support another government committing these acts. As the climate continues to break down, we need to prepare to welcome more refugees, so our future government needs to make sure refugees can easily become fully integrated in our society.

Health

In a fair and equitable society, everyone must be able to access good healthcare. Our NHS needs to be properly funded, and NHS workers must be paid fairly too. In an increasingly stressful world, we need to make sure mental health is prioritised for everyone.  As the climate continues to change, more pressure will be put on health systems, increasing the importance of supporting the NHS adequately so it can adapt to fluctuating demands. Once the NHS is properly supported we must also commit to delivering sustainable and green healthcare wherever possible.

Housing

We need to see housing made more affordable, making sure that both new and existing houses are updated to be more eco-friendly, and providing government support so that these updates are affordable for everyone. We also need to make sure everyone lives in close access to nature, with connections to public transport and other important amenities.

Social Justice

Climate justice cannot exist without social justice. We need our next government to understand this, and to work towards ending discrimination in all forms. We especially need to see commitments to anti-racism and support for the trans community.  To make climate action possible for all countries, our next government also needs to support global sustainable development, especially for climate vulnerable nations.
